House of George W. Davies
Worcestershire
It might look traditional on the outside, but behind the exterior of this 17th-century stone building on the High Street, King of retail George Davies has transformed interiors to blend contemporary chic and original features, with attention to every detail, while James Wilson's cooking makes for a truly memorable meal.
Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
‘It might look traditional on the outside’, says our inspector, but the interiors of this 17th-century stone building are ‘a million miles from Cotswolds twee’. A foodie hotel, it opened in August 2025 after a three-year transformation by ‘King of the High Street’ George Davies (Next, Per Una, George at Asda), his wife Arlene, and designer Laura Cole. ‘Attention to detail’ is evident in everything from staff uniforms to the colour of napkins, and ‘style is a given’. House bedrooms, blending ‘contemporary chic’ with beams and exposed stone, have a coffee machine, discreet TV, signature scented toiletries. There are four further rooms in a modern annexe. The restaurant, opening onto a terrace, is ‘so minimalist that it seems stark’, but chef James Wilson’s modern British cooking with a Nordic accent made for ‘a truly memorable meal. The first bite of crab croustade canapé topped with sea herbs and local flowers told me this was going to be special.’ Vegans are no less spoilt. ‘The snug, in dusky reds and olive greens along with a wood-burning stove, is cosier and the perfect place for a post-dinner drink.’ This makes a 'superb base from which to explore Broadway's artistic past'.
