The Old Bell Hotel
Malmesbury, Wiltshire
Built as lodgings for the now-ruined abbey, 'Britain's oldest inn', much altered over centuries and cherished by its Texan owners, has a wide choice of beautifully presented rooms and appealing dining options.
Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
Once the guest house for the now-ruined 12th-century abbey, this mainly Edwardian inn retains fascinating vestiges of its 13th-century origins. Owned by Texans Kim and Whit Hanks, it has an interesting mix of rooms, including bijou singles, beamed ‘character’ rooms, cosy master rooms in the coach house, and self-catering accommodation in a townhouse annexe. A master suite has an antique four-poster. All are individually designed, with Hypnos mattress and Bramley toiletries. Everything is beautifully thought out and presented. In Abbey Row restaurant the short menu offers dishes such as vegetable risotto; plaice with confit fennel, tomato, clam and vanilla butter. Alternatively, dine from the lounge menu on steak, fish and chips, crab linguine. Dogs are welcome.
