Washingborough Hall Hotel
Lincoln, Lincolnshire
A popular wedding venue, this Georgian former rectory with the ambience of a small country-house hotel scored highly with Guide inspectors for the superb cooking: a place worth visiting for the restaurant alone.
Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
With its ‘large and attractive’ landscaped garden and gate access to the church grounds next door, it's no surprise that this former Georgian rectory not far from Lincoln is a popular wedding venue. But the 'superb food' here also makes it 'well worth a visit for the dining alone', report our inspectors. The ambience was that of a ‘small, comfortable country house – lots of plaid carpeting and large rooms off to right and left, with folk taking afternoon tea’. Staff were 'very helpful and willing'. A lower ground-floor room in the Church House extension, with private patio, was ‘rather sombre though perfectly adequate’. Although it came with air conditioning and a blackout blind, there was neither safe, robes nor a fridge (fresh milk was available from a fridge upstairs). ‘Rooms on the upper floors are more desirable (some quite sumptuous) and have views.’ It was at dinner that our inspectors were most impressed. ‘On a half-board package, we were pleased and surprised to have choice of all dishes. Twice-baked cheese soufflé with cherry tomato ragout was delicious. Lemon and garlic roasted chicken, sweetcorn purée, spring onion and Tunworth arancini was close to perfection.’ At breakfast ‘the food was as beautifully cooked and presented as at dinner’.
