Good Hotel Guide Review
A useful stopover’, this revamped roadside Victorian coaching inn ‘is liked by locals for its much-praised food and good value’. Barnaby Williams is the ‘hard-working, ever-present’ owner. Inside is ‘an open and contemporary rustic space (a wood burner, a hops-hung ceiling, black-and-white photographs of its history), with a cosy little sitting room off the main area; it has a very pleasant atmosphere’. Chef Jacob Vaughan’s imaginative pub grub, much of it cooked in the Josper charcoal oven, is served on scrubbed pine tables; perhaps partridge breast, confit legs, Puy lentils, poached pear, parsnip crisps. ‘Bright and immaculately kept’ bedrooms have a modern style that takes advantage of their generous proportions.
