A 17th-century Carthusian monastery is now this “serious hotel with a formal atmosphere” (Relais & Châteaux). It stands amid famous vineyards in the Médoc, a boring stretch of gravel-based land north-west of Bordeaux which produces some of the world”s finest red wines: Pauillac is a top appellation. Service is “a good mix of friendly and sophisticated”, say recent visitors. There are “lovely, rather clubby” public rooms, and a charming grassy courtyard. Breakfasts and bedrooms are admired. “Our “superior” room had fine furniture, and a patio with parasols.” Some beds are king-size. “Superb bath.” Wine-tasting courses are offered.
