Facing the sea, near the spectacular bridge which links Oléron to the mainland, this white-fronted property is in a village in the south-east of the island. it is an unsophisticated hotel, popular with French holidaymakers. “The restaurant, crammed with tables, each with a dark blue tablecloth, is renowned for its seafood fresher than fresh, and sumptuous puddings,” says a recent visitor (to sit by the large bay windows you must book in advance). “Breakfast, in a conservatory with bright yellow paper tablecloths, is copious.” There is a terrace for alfresco meals. The 19th-century building has been renovated, in “somewhat stark” style: “minimalist” bedrooms have modern textiles; bathrooms are well appointed. Half of the rooms face the sea, the others look on to a “petite forêt” of pine and mimosa. “The busy road between hotel and sea quietens at night, and double glazing is effective against the noise of wind and rain in stormy weather.”
