In an area of the Perigord, rich in geese, plum trees and pigeonniers, this traditional chateau hotel stands in country surrounded by forest. The present owners, Catherine and Yves Staebell, bought it derelict and restored it in chic 19th-century style with much patterned wall covering and modern facilities. 'All is done with excellent taste, good quality antique furniture and objects. Toile hangings – not wallpaper – in the bedrooms. We occupied the suite with delight. Monsieur does the cooking “au gout du jour” on a limited menu. Madame fronts the house. She is a veritable dynamo, speaks beautiful English, and has an amazing, outgoing, cheerful personality. The staff is more reserved but absolutely charming.' Meals can be taken alfresco on fine days. Self-service breakfast in the converted horse stables across the courtyard is a 'totally amazing spread'. Wooden stairs lead to bedrooms on two floors. No lift.
