High in the mountains in Upper Provence, outside a lovely but touristy village, is this 'special place'. René Marcellin's converted 16th-century bastide stands in a large estate: lush fields dotted with grazing sheep, cattle and horses, forests, and a small lake. 'Utter tranquillity. We enjoyed listening to silence,' says a visitor. 'Marvellous as ever,' says a regular guest; other visitors mention the 'friendly atmosphere' and the 'helpful, personable' staff. 'Mme Marcellin was charming.' The bedrooms are spacious, some with a sofa and balcony. Food is prepared by M. Marcellin, and half-board options are available. 'All very good; quantities not vast.' Many ingredients are home produced. 'Excellent breakfast: home-made jams and yogurt.' 'Our room, decorated in pretty sky blue, faced the piscine, which has a large hood allowing off-season swimming.'
