Good Hotel Guide Review

‘A warm-hearted spot with obliging staff, good food, gracefully homey rooms and a genial community feel’, Piers Baker’s 15th-century inn is ‘a good place in which to find oneself’, say Guide inspectors in 2017. ‘This is what pubs were meant to look like: low-beamed ceilings, wide wooden floorboards, red banquettes, the comforting smell of log fires merrily burning; in the oak-panelled lounge, a comely mishmash of sofas and armchairs. Behind the curving elm bar, the barman was a young, tattooed, flannelled chap with an enormous ear piercing and an easy disposition.’ Bedrooms are individually designed. ‘Dovecot, our well-lit room, smallish but sufficient, had crisp bedlinens, puffy pillows, a deep armchair, ground coffee, chic teas – all you could wish for, except a solid wall to the bathroom (we’d been warned – choose another room if you value privacy).’ Chef Jack Levine’s cooking is ‘modern English pubby via Italy’; a dish of lemon sole on the bone was ‘well conceived, with bursts of salty cockles’. While St Mary’s church clock chimes, breakfast on croissants, fruit compotes and thick yogurt, and ‘skilfully cooked’ hot dishes.

Guest comments

'A convivial local gathering spot. We liked its warm-heartedness, its easy community feel, its obliging staff, its graceful, homey rooms. ' - AS - March, 2017
'We had a really comfortable short break. Our room was large, with a comfortable bed, chairs for sitting and good lighting. The bathroom was a good size though could have had a larger washbasin. Dinners were good especially our first night. The mains on the second night were the same. Breakfast was good. The young staff were helpful and very pleasant, the rooms were all freshly decorated and sparkling. ' - Sara A. Price - August, 2014
'We and thoroughly recommend this friendly inn. The staff were welcoming and pleasant. Our room, Butchers, at the back, was quiet. Not a lot of space for sitting and reading but we sat either in the bar or the lounge. Our bathroom was exemplary, spacious, with everything you need. The food was really good. Starter dishes come in two sizes so you can choose one for a main course. At breakfast, the orange juice was very good, and it was refreshing to see some more unusual cooked dishes on offer. ' - Jill Bennett - March, 2014
