Good Hotel Guide Review
‘A warm-hearted spot with obliging staff, good food, gracefully homey rooms and a genial community feel’, Piers Baker’s 15th-century inn is ‘a good place in which to find oneself’, say Guide inspectors in 2017. ‘This is what pubs were meant to look like: low-beamed ceilings, wide wooden floorboards, red banquettes, the comforting smell of log fires merrily burning; in the oak-panelled lounge, a comely mishmash of sofas and armchairs. Behind the curving elm bar, the barman was a young, tattooed, flannelled chap with an enormous ear piercing and an easy disposition.’ Bedrooms are individually designed. ‘Dovecot, our well-lit room, smallish but sufficient, had crisp bedlinens, puffy pillows, a deep armchair, ground coffee, chic teas – all you could wish for, except a solid wall to the bathroom (we’d been warned – choose another room if you value privacy).’ Chef Jack Levine’s cooking is ‘modern English pubby via Italy’; a dish of lemon sole on the bone was ‘well conceived, with bursts of salty cockles’. While St Mary’s church clock chimes, breakfast on croissants, fruit compotes and thick yogurt, and ‘skilfully cooked’ hot dishes.
Sunday Sleepover Special Offer
When everyone else is thinking about the week ahead, you can relax after Sunday lunch and stay the night…and have some supper of course! At £200 per room (based on two sharing), it is a bit of a steal. So what do you get? Bed and breakfast (and yes, it includes a cooked breakfast if you’re up to it on Monday); Sunday lunch and Sunday dinner, both from either our main menu or bar menu, to the total value of £55 per person. This offer cannot be taken in conjunction with any other offer or discount and will be available all year EXCEPT bank holiday weekends (sorry to slightly spoil it!). Check into your room will not be available until after 2pm but you are welcome to have lunch any time from 12pm. To benefit from this offer, please mention The Good Hotel Guide when booking.
This hotel accepts discount vouchers which entitle readers to a 25% discount off their normal B&B rate for a single night’s stay. Each printed copy of the Guide contains six vouchers worth in total about £150.Buy the guide
