Good Hotel Guide Review

‘A convivial local gathering spot’, Piers Baker’s 15th-century timber-framed inn stands ‘in a prime situation’ in ‘this endearing village of variously coloured houses’ in Constable country. There have been changes since last year (new furniture in bar and dining room), but it is still the quintessential village pub, with oak beams and open fires in bar, lounge and restaurant. Access to two of the bedrooms is via the terrace, up an Elizabethan staircase. Rooms vary in size. Some overlook the garden, some the street and St Mary’s Church with its soothing chimes. Constable, at the front, has a bay window and half-tester bed. The bar menu now goes beyond sandwiches, while in the dining room, Jack Levine’s cooking is, as ever, modern English pub fare with Italian gusto, served in ‘copious portions’. Maybe artichoke risotto with confit garlic, or ‘a cucina-povera-inspired dish of Sutton Hoot chicken involtini with butter beans and chorizo’. ‘A sweet, jiggly panacotta went perfectly with stewed rhubarb.’ After an ‘exceptional breakfast (freshly squeezed orange, ‘perfect’ omelettes), it’s not two miles on foot, along and across the Stour, to Flatford Mill.

Guest comments

'A convivial local gathering spot. We liked its warm-heartedness, its easy community feel, its obliging staff, its graceful, homey rooms. ' - AS - March, 2017
'We had a really comfortable short break. Our room was large, with a comfortable bed, chairs for sitting and good lighting. The bathroom was a good size though could have had a larger washbasin. Dinners were good especially our first night. The mains on the second night were the same. Breakfast was good. The young staff were helpful and very pleasant, the rooms were all freshly decorated and sparkling. ' - Sara A. Price - August, 2014
'We and thoroughly recommend this friendly inn. The staff were welcoming and pleasant. Our room, Butchers, at the back, was quiet. Not a lot of space for sitting and reading but we sat either in the bar or the lounge. Our bathroom was exemplary, spacious, with everything you need. The food was really good. Starter dishes come in two sizes so you can choose one for a main course. At breakfast, the orange juice was very good, and it was refreshing to see some more unusual cooked dishes on offer. ' - Jill Bennett - March, 2014
