Good Hotel Guide Review

‘A graceful spot in Suffolk countryside, this modern make-over of a 243-year-old mill surprises with its boutiquey bedrooms and ambitious dinners,’ say Guide inspectors in 2017. The beamed dining room is in the main mill building, whose 19th-century chimney cuts ‘a striking silhouette’. After ‘lots of complimentary nibbles’, what follows, in ‘countryside portions’, might be ‘an inspired combination of seaweed pommes Anna, roasted sprout heart, clapshot bridie and a painterly tangle of sea cabbage’; ‘lamb rump cooked beautifully pink’. Dietary requirements are handled with ‘generosity and graciousness’. Among the stylish bedrooms, five new ‘nooks’ have sprouted up in the meadow. ‘Our large, well-thought-out room, in a good-looking clapboard building, was impressive, down to the pulpy, freshly squeezed orange juice in the mini-fridge. (We would have liked an option of twin beds, however.) Through glass terrace doors, the view towards the mill stream beyond the trees was simply dreamy.’ Ask for a window seat in the morning, for breakfast (perhaps ‘a picture-perfect plate of French toast’ or a bowl of ‘well-balanced’ Bircher muesli) overlooking the resident swans on the water.

Guest comments

'Some of the bedrooms have an open-plan bathroom incorporated into the bedroom, even including the toilet. The dividing wall was more of a separator and neither reached the ceiling nor the bedroom walls. Bathrooms are modern and minimalist. ' - vv - August, 2017
'A wholly enjoyable experience, best undertaken on an empty stomach. What matters is the generosity of spirit among the staff, totally unforced; the attractive, well considered accommodation; the praiseworthy cooking – modern, inventive, compelling yet totally accessible. ' - MW - March, 2017
'We enjoyed our stay and thought it very stylish. Huge white room with los of high-quality extras and an ultra-modern bathroom. Good food and excellent breakfast. My wife is a vegetarian, and was well looked after. ' - Evan Jon Hughes - May, 2014
