Good Hotel Guide Review

A recent make-over has turned this 244-year-old mill into a thoroughly modern restaurant-with-rooms. Under strapping beams in the main mill, long-serving chef (and now chef/patron) Lee Bye serves ‘ambitious dinners’ (‘best undertaken on an empty stomach’) in the restaurant. Dietary requirements are handled with ‘generosity and graciousness’, perhaps Worlington duck egg, Clem’s carrot, oyster mushrooms for vegetarians, ‘lamb rump cooked beautifully pink’ for their omnivorous table-mates. ‘Afterwards, a neat bottle of sloe gin left bedside was much appreciated.’ The ‘impressive’ boutiquey bedrooms (no twin beds) include a set of ‘nooks’ in the meadow, and ‘large, well-thought-out rooms, in a good-looking clapboard building’. Freshly squeezed orange juice in the mini-fridge and ‘dreamy’ views towards the millstream are pleasing finishing touches. Guide readers this year say, ‘We liked the modern, minimalist bathroom, but there are flip plugs in the basin – contact lens wearers beware!’ At breakfast (‘picture-perfect’ French toast, ‘deliciously tart home-made raspberry jam’, home-baked brioche), a window seat overlooking the millpond and its cadre of swans is a must.

Guest comments

'Some of the bedrooms have an open-plan bathroom incorporated into the bedroom, even including the toilet. The dividing wall was more of a separator and neither reached the ceiling nor the bedroom walls. Bathrooms are modern and minimalist. ' - vv - August, 2017
'A wholly enjoyable experience, best undertaken on an empty stomach. What matters is the generosity of spirit among the staff, totally unforced; the attractive, well considered accommodation; the praiseworthy cooking – modern, inventive, compelling yet totally accessible. ' - MW - March, 2017
'We enjoyed our stay and thought it very stylish. Huge white room with los of high-quality extras and an ultra-modern bathroom. Good food and excellent breakfast. My wife is a vegetarian, and was well looked after. ' - Evan Jon Hughes - May, 2014
