Good Hotel Guide Review
Heralded as the ultimate in cool when it opened in 2004, this modish hotel, in a converted Victorian warehouse, remains ‘on good form’. Locals and passers-by drop in at any time of day for food and drinks in the open-plan café/co-working space: its gallery of work by a roster of artists-in-residence makes an inspiring backdrop for mid-morning smoothies, afternoon-slump coffees and breakfasts of American pancakes or avocado-topped sourdough toast. At any time of day, too, the staff are ‘exceptionally nice’. Uncluttered bedrooms have personality in their splashes of colour, and host of thoughtful touches: Penguin paperbacks, chic toiletries, a hot-water bottle in a hand-knitted cosy. Live the high life in one of the spacious rooftop studios, which have sun loungers on a private patio. At sundown, the atrium coffee shop transforms into a wine bar, with a menu of craft ales, cocktails, sharing platters, small plates and bar snacks to match. A short three-course menu might include beetroot salad, goat’s curd, apple; chicken and chanterelle pie, cauliflower purée, hispi cabbage. Sister hotels are across the square or across the city (see next entries). (BB)
