Good Hotel Guide Review
Guests bestow ‘top marks for the perfect mattress’ at this chic hotel on a residential street of white stucco town houses. Much else is praiseworthy, too: the ‘helpful, courteous staff’, the ‘convenient location’, the ‘home-away-from-home feel’. Part of Tim and Kit Kemp’s Firmdale group, it is decorated in the family way: with elan. Beyond the ionic portico and balconies of iron lace, the Victorian building is lively with colour, prints and patterns. Floor-to-ceiling windows fill the drawing room with light; through the conservatory hung with original artwork, the leafy patio garden is a treat in this busy part of town. Every bedroom is decorated differently, and supplied with good amenities: fine bedlinen, garden-scented bath products, a fully stocked minibar; books, board games and mini-bathrobes for the youngest guests. A short menu of uncomplicated food (crab and chilli spaghetti; grilled hake, brown shrimp, parsley butter) is available all day. On a fine morning, ask to have breakfast surrounded by garden greenery. The museums are within a ten-minute walk; the Royal Albert Hall is just an amble further.
