VisitEngland Five Star Restaurant with Rooms
Good Hotel Guide Review
‘A fantastic place to stay’, this ‘friendly, accommodating’ restaurant-with-rooms stands on the main street of a ‘lovely village’ of antique stores, art galleries and independent shops. It is part of the family-run Stuart Inns group, which is ‘totally committed to getting it right’. The ‘informal, yet polished’ restaurant is a ‘buzzy’ local destination, where diners come for ‘creative, well-presented meals’ – perhaps Suffolk asparagus mousse, crispy pheasant egg; Lavenham lamb, smoked aubergine, fried quinoa. Sleep in one of the ‘boldly furnished, beautifully finished bedrooms’ in the main house or in Melford House next door. (No staff remain overnight.) Rooms vary in size – a snug room has a claw-footed bathtub in the bathroom; a superior room has a deep armchair in the bay window – but all have a super-king-size bed, still and sparkling water, fruit and home-made brownies. Ideal for a family, a new suite has a large copper bath in the master bedroom, and a pull-out sofa bed in a separate sitting area. Sample the ‘delightfully nutty granola’ at breakfast before stocking up on treats and East Anglian food items at the Duck Deli next door. (Antony Wallace, and others)
