Lough Bawn House
Collinstown, Co. Westmeath
Verity Butterfield clearly loves to welcome guests to her loch-side Georgian house, with blazing fires, comfy sofas, good artworks, home-baked biscuits, excellent breakfasts, and dinner by arrangement.
Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
'A long, romantic, tree-lined drive' climbs gently to this classical Georgian house 'overlooking sheep-filled pastures and a glistening lough'. Fourth-generation owner Verity Butterfield 'really seems to enjoy sharing her home with guests', our inspectors say, as it is promoted from the Shortlist. 'When we arrived, tea was produced within minutes, with a plate of home-baked biscuits, and she sat down for a good chat.' Interiors are 'bright and welcoming, with wooden floors, antique patterned rugs, vast gilded mirrors over mantelpieces, displays of wild flowers, walls painted in soft hues, and everywhere something lovely to rest your eyes on'. The 'pretty, elegant bedrooms' have 'electric blankets on large, comfortable beds'. One room has 'sumptuous peacock-pattern wallpaper', while the real things strut their stuff outside. Two rooms share a 'a very nice bathroom, with a roll-top bath and wet-room-style shower'. Readers enjoyed a 'really tasty, beautifully presented' dinner, cooked by Verity, by arrangement. Our inspectors didn't dine, 'but judging by breakfast, there is no reason to doubt the quality'. (Oliver Thomas)
