Good Hotel Guide Review
There’s a ‘jovial, relaxed’ feel at this modern pub-with-rooms. The ‘cleverly’ renovated former hospital building is in an unlikely setting, on the edge of a new housing estate. Bedrooms are styled with a mix of modern furnishings and antique pieces. ‘Ours was uncluttered, clean and bright, with a well-lit bathroom and a generous supply of toiletries.’ In the ‘heaving’ bar try a pint of the pub’s own locally brewed St Mary’s Ale. In the restaurant, classic pub grub or local specialities. Breakfast is served in a high-ceilinged room ‘flooded with light’: a buffet has ‘excellent’ juice, ‘very good’ croissants, pains au chocolat; pick from ‘interesting’ cooked. Jesmond Dene House, Newcastle upon Tyne (see main entry), is under the same ownership.
