Good Hotel Guide Review

There are open fires here, and views of Skiddaw; the traditional chintz and prints are ‘part of the charm’, says a devotee in 2017. Standing in ‘lovely, quiet grounds’ ideal for spotting red squirrels, the 19th-century battlemented house has been run as a dog-friendly hotel for 25 years by Stephen Bore and Angela and Adrian Hyde. ‘Friendly, warm, lived-in – it was the most peaceful, relaxed holiday we’ve had.’ Even the smallest bedroom has a king-size bed and seating space; all rooms are provided with fresh fruit, fresh milk and flowers. ‘Our spacious, high-ceilinged turret room, with large, curved windows, was rather grand: two armchairs and a four-poster bed with high-quality bedlinen; modern fittings and fluffy towels in the bathroom. A marble fireplace held a collection of fir cones.’ In the restaurant, ‘favoured by local farmers and families for special occasions’, cooking is on the robust side of fine dining. Local produce comes to the fore, perhaps rack and liver of lamb, haggis, dauphinoise potatoes, root vegetables. ‘Breakfast was memorable for the kippers – served whole, not in fillets.’ (ST, JB)

Guest comments

'Its strengths are its setting, its welcome to dogs, its excellent cooking, its civilised dress code and relaxed ambience. ' - Robert Gower - August, 2017
'A fine example of a Good Hotel. We enjoyed the warm welcome and discreet attentive service from Angela, who is the perfect hostess. The attention to detail with many individual touches sets this hotel apart from many in its class. Chef's expertise with flavours and food combinations is very evident and it is a fine-dining experience for hearty appetites after days out in this lovely area. ' - Mary Coles - November, 2015
'Very friendly welcome for us and our dog. Very comfortable room and superb food. All staff very attentive. Most useful to be warned about the attacking buzzard across the field! ' - David Boehm - July, 2015
'Less than two years ago we adopted our neighbour's dog: the neighbour had terminal cancer, and he asks us to take care of his nine-year-old Jack Russell, Mick, when the inevitable happened. We are now into 'dog-friendly' holidays. We stayed at Overwater in June 2015 and it was the most peaceful, relaxed holiday we have had. Everything was perfect, warm, friendly 'lived in' feel to the hotel, excellent rooms, food, service, couldn't fault anything. ' - James Banks - June, 2015
