Good Hotel Guide Review
Overlooking a bay on the Argyll coast, Calum and Rachel Ross’s ‘friendly, good-value’ country house, next door to the exotic Arduaine Garden, is in ‘the most stunning spot’. ‘There’s something magical about the light, at all times and in all weathers.’ In the bedrooms, the sea views are the main feature. ‘Our annexe room was clean and well kept, warm and comfortable (the decor could have done with some updating, though). There was plenty of storage space; the bathroom, small but adequate, had soft towels and plenty of hot water.’ Watch the light fade around the islands over home-made canapés and pre-dinner drinks (perhaps ‘really good’ Crinan gin or Loch Fyne beer). At dinner, chef Roger Brown’s ‘tasty and beautifully presented’ dishes might include guinea fowl with a ‘delicious’ risotto; ‘masses of local cheeses’; a lemon dessert, ‘light and perfect for the end of the meal’. ‘Breakfast was well cooked and efficiently served. I had the “wee breakfast” – what I’d call a “full Scottish”!’ Fido’s not forgotten: there are dog-friendly ground-floor rooms; the coast is nearby.
