Good Hotel Guide Review

Enter through the ‘splendid’ wrought iron gates and continue up a ‘beautifully wooded’ drive: in ‘meticulously tended’ grounds stands this ‘impressive’ 19th-century Scottish baronial castle. It is now owned by Paul and Poppy Szkiler; John Orr, the manager, is ‘calm, kind, perceptive – very much a people person’. Within oak-panelled halls, all is ‘refined’, from the ‘magnificent’ staircases and Corinthian columns to a ‘delightful flight of carved ivory elephants’. ‘The spacious, immaculate lounge, with its deep, high-backed sofas, has the feeling of a grand entrance hall.’ Traditionally decorated bedrooms have views of garden and woodland, or the wild Ayrshire coast. ‘Our gracious room looked over lush gardens towards Ailsa Craig rising majestically in the sea. In the large period bathroom: soft towels and bathrobes. Housekeeping was excellent.’ In the restaurant, ‘high-quality’ French–Scottish dishes (perhaps roast chicken, pommes purée, baby vegetables, black pudding bonbon) use produce from the Victorian greenhouse and the kitchen garden. Breakfast, ‘served promptly’, continues the feast: home-made muesli and yogurt; ‘a wide selection of tempting hot dishes’. (Robert Gower). Glenapp Castle is also a member of Pride of Britain hotels.
