Good Hotel Guide Review

After more than 50 years, this country house hotel and spa on the edge of the New Forest still sets the standard for luxury. From garden rooms with balcony or terrace to tree-house suites with hot tub, it has ‘fabulous’ accommodation. ‘Everything is taken care of from the minute you check in.’ But at this sister hotel to Cliveden House, Taplow (see entry), luxury does not mean stuffy: ‘It feels very familiar – you’re greeted with a smile and a hello.’ Staff are ‘charming, efficient, friendly’. There are children’s welcome gifts, a kids’ club, supervised supper. All-day dining options include light bites in The Pool bar, while The Kitchen restaurant (with gleaming cookery school) serves informal fare. In the dining room, executive head chef Simon Addison and head chef Luke Matthews work with local and home-grown produce to create ‘memorable’ dishes including Thai lobster curry; slow-cooked ox cheek, celeriac and horseradish, oxtail cromesquis. A rare note of dissent from a Guide regular in 2018: a terrible breakfast croissant and ‘dinner service wasn’t topnotch. Sky-high prices lead to sky-high expectations, which are not always fulfilled.’ For most guests, however, it was ‘perfect’, ‘super-relaxing’. (Debby Barry, Pauline Weddell, and many more). xxxx

Guest comments

'There were 15 of us enjoying a family weekend (our ages ranged from 8 to 80). From the start we loved the feeling of laid-back luxury. We enjoyed superb food and wine. Our rooms were stunning. The facilities at the hotel ensured the whole family could participate in things together, from beach walks to swimming and tennis. The staff were excellent. ' - Kirsten Hayward - October, 2018
'Friendly, welcoming staff who couldn't do enough for us, including finding me a hairbrush as I'd forgotten to pack mine. We loved the relaxed atmosphere, which you don't always get at a "posh" hotel. Our room was enormous and the bathroom bigger! The pool was a decent size too. ' - Michele Blake - April, 2018
'Lovely in almost every way. Very child-friendly. But this meant that the restrictive hours for children made the swmming pool very crowded. ' - Tom Raphael - January, 2018
'We had a wonderful golden wedding celebration. The treehouses are particularly special. The concept of having the upstairs room (attic) for the children was lovely. The continental breakfast was luxurious . At dinner the staff knew exactly what was ordered and it was carried out efficiently and with grace. A really special hotel, wonderful for a momentous occasion. ' - Jackie and Hugh Tunstall-Pedoe - July, 2017
