Good Hotel Guide Review

‘Superb’, ‘excellent’, ‘impressive’, ‘delightful’ – on the edge of the New Forest, this model of a country house hotel and spa is on top form, having celebrated its golden anniversary. ‘Friendly, attentive staff’ extend ‘the warmest welcome’ at the 18th-century manor house and throughout the massive estate; there are indoor and outdoor swimming pools, cooking classes, a children’s club, a woodland stream to follow to the beach. Choose one of the many ‘beautiful, oh-so-comfortable’ bedrooms and suites, or aim even higher: tree-house suites in a leafy setting have a mini-kitchen, a wood-burning stove, a spa bath, and a breakfast hamper in the morning. Simon Addison is now chef in the conservatory dining room, where produce from the kitchen garden informs the ‘divine’ modern menu (perhaps including Quantock duck breast, sweet potato, sprouting broccoli, heritage carrots). Informal meals (superfood salads; wood-fired pizzas) are served in the ‘brilliant’ new Kitchen restaurant, part of the sleek, purpose-built cookery school, complete with its own lounge and terrace. ‘We can’t speak highly enough of the place.’ (Chris Turner, Jenny Russell, and others)

Guest comments

'Friendly, welcoming staff who couldn't do enough for us, including finding me a hairbrush as I'd forgotten to pack mine. We loved the relaxed atmosphere, which you don't always get at a "posh" hotel. Our room was enormous and the bathroom bigger! The pool was a decent size too. ' - Michele Blake - April, 2018
'From the moment you book, to the moment you pull out of the car park on your return to normal life, you feel special. The service is faultless; the staff come across with real passion for Chewton Glen. We stayed in a stunning junior suite. There is a delightful walk down to the beach through the grounds. They offer complimentary use of the wellington boots for country walks (one of those many little touches that made the whole experience one of our all-time favourites). On Saturday, being served the most delicious wine and food by the most attentive staff made for a magical evening. ' - Lori Miles - January, 2018
'Lovely in almost every way. Very child-friendly. But this meant that the restrictive hours for children made the swmming pool very crowded. ' - Tom Raphael - January, 2018
'We had a wonderful golden wedding celebration. They treated us very well. The treehouses are particularly special. The concept of having the upstairs room (attic) for the children was lovely. The continental breakfast was luxurious . At dinner the staff knew exactly what was ordered and it was carried out efficiently and with grace. It’s a really special hotel, wonderful for a momentous occasion. We would definitely go back when we’ve saved up. ' - Jackie and Hugh Tunstall-Pedoe - July, 2017
'An excellent experience. The staff were friendly and attentive, the hotel and grounds impressive, and the food, wine and service was superb. The spa facilities were good and spacious with a wide variety of treatments, from again welcoming and attentive staff. Generally you get in life what you pay for, pay the little extra and indulge yourself at the Chewton Glen; highly recommended! ' - Chris Turner - December, 2016
