Good Hotel Guide Review

Gerry and Ann Price ‘set the standard’ at their ‘well-run’ pub/restaurant-with-rooms, where the ‘hands-on owners’ foster a hub-of-the-village atmosphere. It’s cemented by locals, who drop in throughout the day for a hand-pulled pint or coffee and a chat in the airy, bright, wood-floored bar with its old wine barrel, cartoons and prints of hares and pheasants. The like might show up in the muzak-free restaurant, where locally caught game features on the ‘excellent’ menu. Characteristic dishes: pigeon breasts, kohlrabi, sprouting broccoli, gin-poached cherries; haunch of red deer, shoulder croquette, preserved raspberries, asparagus, chocolate jus; all accompanied by a ‘serious’ wine list. Set well back from road noise, a courtyard garden is edged with ‘well-appointed, practical’ bedrooms. Named after something ‘personal’ in the owners’ lives, each is ‘bright and modern without being trendy’. ‘The bed was very comfortable, the shower excellent; we were especially impressed by the thoughtful design (double power points below the mirror, good soundproofing, etc).’ A leisurely breakfast (served till 11 am on the weekend) embraces thickly sliced toast, praiseworthy kedgeree, filter coffee. Wisley (RHS garden)is close by. (JS, CR)

Guest comments

'We were impressed with the high standard of the accommodation. Lovely pub with very nice people having a drink. Restaurant was top notch. Had two dinners there, one with a large crowd of my relatives. Jerry, the owner, was especially helpful in making sure we got great service. Fast drive to Heathrow airport when the time came for us to depart - it's so close and so delightful. ' - SW - July, 2017
'We greatly enjoyed our stay. The inn could be likened to an upmarket motel attached to a bar/restaurant within very easy reach of the M3. Bedrooms are well furnished. Clearly a lot of thought has gone into the selection of fittings by the “hands on” proprietors. Noise did not trouble us, either from the road or the adjacent outside seating/boules area. The menu does not change daily but was long enough for plenty of choice during our stay. Breakfasts and dinners were excellent, and both so popular with locals, that even with a DB&B booking you have to be careful to ensure that you have a table booked for dinner. ' - John Bush - June, 2017
'We were impressed with the professionalism and genuine friendliness of all the staff. It was good that the full menu was available in both the bar and the restaurant - and the food (dinner and breakfast) was excellent. Our room was well designed. The bed was very comfortable, the shower (no bath) was excellent - the only feature of our room we didn't like was the shallow wash basin. The road was very busy (though the soundproofing was good). ' - John Saul - February, 2016
