Good Hotel Guide Review

Guests at this privately owned hotel join a tradition begun by the rowdy bunch of sailors, shipbuilders and smugglers who once crowded the 18th-century watering hole. The nooks, crannies and secret passages remain, but the experience today, at the end of a cobbled street, is a much more tranquil one. Many of the bedrooms have views across the quayside, the Romney Marshes and Camber Castle. The rooms may be old-fashioned, but they’re ‘warm and comfortable’, and are supplied with basic comforts: a hospitality tray, a clock radio, slippers. In the restaurant, the menu of traditional English dishes includes a catch of the day, straight from Rye Bay.

Guest comments

'Our 3-day midweek winter break was exceptional value. All the staff, including management and cleaners were pleasant. Our good-size room had been almost completely refurbished, and was always warm enough. It was comfortable, but the bed was fitted with a duvet, and sheets and blankets could not be offered. The ensuite bath/shower room needed refurbishing. The food at dinner was well cooked and included in the' off season package' was a bottle of house wine per couple each night and the choice of wines was good. Breakfast was not up to the standard of the dinner. Muzak varied between classical and old pop. ' - Colin Boocock - January, 2014
'This is a comfortable and well run hotel. The rooms are lovely and food very good and the staff welcoming and helpful. We stay at the Hope Anchor every year because we love Rye and the surrounding area. ' - Valerie Collier - November, 2013
