Good Hotel Guide Review
On the green of a peaceful village where the rivers Nidd and Ouse meet, this smartly revamped Grade II listed country pub is one visitors make detours for. Chef/patron John Topham, previously widely praised for his cooking at the General Tarleton, Ferrensby (see Shortlist entry), brings his culinary flair to seasonal menus of elevated, Yorkshire-influenced pub food, perhaps Dales lamb or local asparagus, ricotta and hazelnut tortellini. A pizza oven is fired up in the summer. Decorated in a calm, contemplative style, well-equipped bedrooms are above the pub and in newly built Douglas-fir outbuildings set around the landscaped beer garden. Close by, a ferry boat heads upriver to the National Trust’s Beningbrough Hall.
