Good Hotel Guide Review
Near the Chichester canal towpath, Mariella and William Fleming’s village pub-with-rooms has been rejuvenated with a fresh Scandinavian vibe. A fire is lit in the bar on cold days; in sunshine and rain, choose from a good selection of local ales, organic wines, and bubbly from the nearby vineyard at Tinwood Estate. Upstairs, minimalist bedrooms in grey and white share a small seating area (books, hospitality tray, a bright orange fridge for guests’ use). Each room has a large bed, plump armchairs and country views; two, remarkably spacious, have an original fireplace and a roll-top bathtub. Eat in the snug, elegant dining room or the walled terrace (full use is made of the herb garden and chicken flock): the mix of pub classics and more modern dishes might include slow-roasted sticky beef brisket, French fries, roasted marrow bone.
