Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
In 'a lovely location', with riverside terraces, just across the road from Hampton Court, launch venture for Hector Ross's Signet Collection (see The Retreat at Elcot Park; The Barnsdale) received our inspectors' full endorsement. The 18th-century building, on the site of the Toy Inn (built 1665), has been revamped with no loss of character. Bedrooms have 'a classic feel with a modern twist', bold and subtle paint finishes, exuberant lamps and wallpapers, regatta stripes and ginghams. The Henry VIII suite has a four-poster, a copper roll-top bath with a view of the palace the king swiped off poor old Wolsey. Our inspectors' room had Ottoline's Chintz Constance green and lilac wallpaper, a coffee machine, homemade cookies, vintage books, Bramley toiletries in a 'simple, clean bathroom' with 'powerful shower'. In the circular, river-view 1665, 'good brasserie fare' included 'perfectly cooked chicken Milanese'. The signature cauliflower popcorn was 'tasty, with perhaps too much teriyaki sauce'. A 'really excellent' breakfast brought smoothies, 'coconut and chia-seed compote, croissant, pain au chocolate'; among cooked dishes, 'perfect eggs Florentine'.
