Good Hotel Guide Review

‘A really classic walkers’ delight’, the former 18th-century farmhouse and one-time miners’ tavern continues its century-old tradition of providing accommodation for visitors and hikers, and the Downey family’s inn now provides food too. The cosy spot serves straightforward British classics (and a few fusion favourites) in the traditionally styled dining room; perhaps crispy duck spring rolls; sausage and mash with cider apple chutney. The narrow bar is propped up by locals and visitors quenching thirsts with Thwaites’ cask ales and a good wine list, while dogs lap happily from a water bowl. Pretty bedrooms, in the main hotel and outbuildings, have an alpine sensibility. Breakfast is plentiful fuel for walks in the surrounding fells.
