Good Hotel Guide Review
‘Bring any member of your family here and they would enjoy it.’ Jason King and Simon Page’s pub-with-rooms occupies an 18th-century former hunting lodge in the North Wessex Downs. Locals and visitors – and their family – come for the ‘low-key’, country-cosy atmosphere and Jason King’s ‘extraordinarily good’ cooking. ‘The sourcing is carefully done’ in ‘unfussy dishes’ such as twice-baked Westcombe Cheddar soufflé, braised young leeks; Baughurst House roe deer and root vegetable pie. Simply stylish bedrooms have pleasing amenities: waffle bathrobes, a coffee machine, home-made biscuits. ‘Our Cart House room had a vast bed. In the morning, we opened the curtains to quiet fields of grazing horses.’ Breakfast, a ‘comfortable, leisurely affair’, includes fresh-laid eggs from the pub’s free-range hens.
