Good Hotel Guide Review
‘The beautiful location, wonderful service and excellent food keep us coming back.’ Guide readers who returned this year to Martin Barlow’s hotel, in wooded acres on the Helford river, discovered that ‘tasteful refurbishment’ has created a ‘fresh seaside feel’. Another plus: the ‘amazing facilities for active people, right on the doorstep’. The 18th-century manor house has lounges aplenty (including one on the river foreshore), plus tennis courts, a golf course, a spa, a swimming pool, and wide swathes of garden and woodland to explore. Where to begin? Unpack in one of the well-equipped bedrooms – each is supplied with ‘everything we needed’, including bathrobes, slippers, bottled Cornish water. Newly revamped rooms are light and modern; others retain their traditional air. Dress smartly for dinner in the restaurant, where chef Darren Kelly’s modern menus have ‘plenty of fish’, perhaps locally landed hake or wild Cornish turbot. Lighter meals and afternoon tea can be had in the cocktail bar or conservatory, or on the terrace. Find your sea legs: kayak tours go up Frenchman’s Creek; a ‘terrific’ river cruise is ‘a highlight’.
