Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
The River Teign flows through the grounds of Alex Horsfall’s dog-friendly country house, a former flour mill in ‘a lovely rural spot’ on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. ‘We were truly delighted with our visit,’ write trusted readers. ‘A log stove roared in one of the lounges and we enjoyed a Devon cream tea.’ There is a wide choice of bedrooms and suites of different sizes, styles and outlooks. A new ground-floor annexe room has a private deck overlooking the river. A mobility-friendly ground-floor room was ‘pleasant and well equipped, with a nice little balcony’, though the bathroom wasn’t fully adapted. Will Broom cooks a nightly changing menu of dishes such as roast Creedy Carver duck, salmon en croute, and baked vegetable gratin. ‘We had John Dory, lamb and roast chicken, all excellent. Sensible portion sizes, plenty of vegetables.’ At breakfast there is smoked haddock, kipper with grain mustard and lemon herb butter, local free-range eggs. Everyone enjoys the ambience. ‘The staff are unfailingly efficient, friendly and cheerful.’ ‘We were even given a bag containing mineral water and a snack when we left.’ (Ian Dewey, Peter Anderson, Ralph Aldwinckle, JB)
