Good Hotel Guide Review

A ‘friendly’ welcome awaits at Louise and David Farrance’s ‘peaceful’ B&B, in a 15th-century farmhouse along a country lane. ‘We enjoyed tea and cake in the lovingly tended garden when we arrived.’ The lounge has a traditional beamed ceiling and stone floor (uneven in places, with various steps and changes of level); in the winter, relax in a leather armchair in front of the log fire. Each of the country-style bedrooms is different. The characterful Willow room has exposed beams; the Snug (in fact, ‘roomy and extremely comfortable’) has a private entrance and a log fire. ‘We stayed in the Orchard Suite, which had a spacious double bedroom and two armchairs; a shared lobby led to a second bedroom and a bathroom with a freestanding roll-top bath.’ ‘Excellent’ breakfasts with local bacon and sausages, home-made bread and preserves, and eggs from the Farrances’ free-range hens provide fuel for exploring the Devon and Somerset coasts or Exmoor national park, all within easy reach. (Michael Gwinnell, Mary and Rodney Milne-Day)

Guest comments

'Our fifth visit. The ideal stop-over on our way to and from Cornwall. David and Louise now treat us like old friends. They have stopped offering light suppers but are happy to provide plates, cutlery and glasses for guests to eat their own take- away meal, which they request should be consumed in the dining room or the sitting room, which latter we had to ourselves, enjoying the log burner that had been lit for us. 'We stayed in the Snug, which was spacious and extremely comfortable. Tthe Farrances made us very welcome. Sitting in the lovely gardens for a drink before supper was idyllic. There were 3 of us the first night, so Louise gave us a good cold supper. The next night they recommended a local pub, which was excellent. Their cooked breakfasts are delicious. ' - Mary Milne-Day - September, 2015
