Good Hotel Guide Review
Somerset born and Somerset bred, Louise and David Farrance have run their B&B in this wisteria-hung 15th-century Somerset longhouse for nearly ten years. Their hospitality wins them fans. ‘David and Louise now treat us like old friends,’ report regular Guide readers in 2017, after their fifth stay. Other returning guests agree: ‘It is just as good as before.’ Tea and cake – taken in the ‘lovingly tended’ garden on fine days – mark the start of a visit. Downstairs, the lounge is all wooden beams, uneven stone floors and a log fire; upstairs, garden-fresh flowers appear in the characterful country-style bedrooms in summer months. ‘While they no longer serve an evening meal, the Farrances directed us to a gastropub a mile away, where we had a really good dinner.’ An alternative: guests are provided with plates, cutlery and glasses to eat a take-away meal in the sitting or dining room – ‘which we did, enjoying the log-burner that had been lit for us’. Breakfast is substantial, with local bacon and sausages, home-made bread and preserves. ‘An ideal stopover place for travellers to and from Cornwall.’ (Mary and Rodney Milne-Day, Michael Gwinnell)
