Good Hotel Guide Review
Come down a quiet country lane to this thatch-roofed 14th-century inn ‘in the middle of nowhere’: there are flagstone floors, ancient beams, nooks and crannies, an inglenook fireplace. There’s a new owner, too – Ben Maschler, who has retained the inn’s unpretentious atmosphere and period charm while updating the sophisticated pubby menu and country-cosy bedrooms. The daily-changing selection of uncomplicated dishes uses the best available produce in season; cocktails, local ales and European wines make good accompaniment. Above the pub, simply furnished bedrooms are cheery and cottagey, with a Roberts radio and a clutch of Penguin Classics. Walks from the door; the Nadder valley is all around. 2 miles E of Tisbury.
