Good Hotel Guide Review
Barbara and Simon Andersen ‘get almost everything right’ at their small hotel in a market town in the Wye valley, a friendly, affordable base for exploring the Forest of Dean. Dating back to the 1790s, the former home of pioneering metallurgist David Mushet, has been extended and modernised over the years. Immaculate bedrooms have pine furniture, armchairs, ‘good lighting’, tea, coffee and biscuits; bathrooms have a power shower, good-quality toiletries. The bar’s coffee machine provides complimentary fill-ups. The restaurant specialises in slow-cooked meat dishes including braised beef brisket, horseradish mash, Madeira gravy, steamed vegetables, but has wide-ranging options. ‘Both our dinners were delicious.’ Breakfast brings smoked haddock; eggs all ways; a Forest House full English.
