Good Hotel Guide Review

Family-run for three generations, this large holiday hotel in the Black Forest provides ‘service of the highest quality’, says its nominator. A family-friendly place, it has play houses and many activities for children, and exercise programmes for older guests. There is ‘a vast spa with world-class facilities’. Many come for the Michelin three-star cooking of chef Claus-Peter Lumpp, but the regular food is ‘fabulous’ too, and breakfast has ‘one of the finest spreads I have seen anywhere’. The décor ‘is dated but works well. The staff in traditional dress ‘wear lovely smiles’, and the rooms are ‘spotless’; some have a terrace or balcony with views of the Black Forest. There is good walking in the forest, ‘ or just time to relax’. (PS)

Guest comments

'The Bareiss, deep in the Black Forest, aspires to achieve the very highest standards of service, in every single detail. They do this very well indeed. A certain kind of very wealthy French and German guest stay there, many for a month or more - but there is room for guests of all backgrounds. Every single member of staff was courteous, professional, helpful, and willing to go the extra step to exceed customers' needs. Food is very good and there is lots of it. We thought the breakfast was probably the best we have had, anywhere (easily beating the much-loved Sunday Brunches in the best Four Seasons hotels) - masses of variety and very good quality ingredients. The cakes for afternoon tea are spectacular. ' - AR - March, 2017
