Good Hotel Guide Review

Arrive to tea and home-made biscuits at Paddy and Hannah Flynn’s family-friendly Georgian country house in parkland below the Slieve Bloom mountains. ‘Lovely people’, the hosts encourage an informal, house-party atmosphere in their handsomely lived-in family home, all heaving bookshelves, paintings, log fires and antique furnishings. Choose one of the eclectically furnished bedrooms: large rooms in the main house overlook the lawns and courtyards (look out for the tufted ducks); those in the Yellow House peer over the walled garden. All are cosy, with an electric blanket on the bed. Book ahead for a spot at Paddy Flynn’s communal dinner, so the shopping – for super-fresh, super-local ingredients – can be done in time; dietary needs can be discussed but, in dinner-party style, ‘we decide what you’ll be having’, the Flynns say. (Prefer to eat privately? Ask for the single table by the blazing fire in the study.) In the morning, breakfast on fruit compotes and slices of home-baked bread; griddle scones and a full Irish are hearty options. More reports, please.

Guest comments

'Lovely people. Food in general was fab. ' - Conal and Paul Finnerty - April, 2014
'Last Friday we went to Roundwood House again. They were doing a Halloween evening, most unusual and entertaining: a buffet dinner, a play, ghost stories, dozens of candles. Our room had been repainted since our last stay and its bathroom upgraded. The orange juice at breakfast was most definitely freshly squeezed! Hannah makes her own soda bread: Paddy's mushrooms with blue cheese were served on lovely toast. ' - Jeanette Bloor - November, 2013
