Good Hotel Guide Review
Infused with warmth, Paddy and Hannah Flynn’s Georgian mansion beneath the Slieve Bloom mountains, regains a full entry this year. It may be a little lived in, but few hotels can match its character. Trusted readers give a flavour: ‘We sat by the log fire in the drawing room drinking wine and talking with Hannah and Paddy until well into the night.’ Public spaces have original decorative features, period furnishings. Hannah’s childhood home, the house has a library devoted to the evolution of civilisation, assembled by her father. Bedrooms have antiques, books, artwork, comfortable bed (niggles, a ‘minute’ bathroom, a cracked basin). Four rooms are in the even older Yellow House. A communal no-choice dinner is cooked by Paddy. Vegetarian readers enjoyed a ‘beautifully presented’ parsnip and cashew nut terrine, curried carrot soup, sesame ginger vegetable stack, ‘perfect cheeses’. Meat-eaters devoured lamb loin medallions, blueberry reduction, squash purée, green beans almondine, mint sauce, garlic and lemon cubed potatoes. ‘We’ve enjoyed Paddy’s cooking before but it’s now on a different level.’ Breakfast, served until 11 am, brings home-made bread, yoghurt, muesli, fruit compote, a full Irish.
