Good Hotel Guide Review

‘Old fashioned, but none the worse for that’, the Read family’s traditional hotel enjoys a loyal following. Especially liked by Guide readers this year: the ‘friendly, efficient staff’; the ‘cosy, welcoming atmosphere’; the ‘outstanding food’. Log fires blaze in the comfortable sitting rooms of the Victorian house; most of the ‘well-maintained bedrooms’, two with a balcony, look to the sea. ‘Our superior room had wonderful uninterrupted views of the hotel garden and Morecambe Bay.’ Take morning coffee and afternoon tea in the lounges or under a parasol in the garden. In the evening, Andrew Read and Mark Johnston cook ‘excellent, beautifully presented’ classic English and French dishes ‘with good choice’ (served between 6.30 pm and 7.30 pm).

Guest comments

'I've stayed at enough hotels to know what I want. How did Clare House, measure up? Room clean and well appointed? Tick. Bathroom ditto. Hot water not taking ages to come through, and sink draining quickly? Tick. Firm beds? Tick. Blankets and sheets instead of duvet? Tick. Cheerful staff? Tick. Add to this nice views, a well-tended garden, interesting period decor, innovative and plentiful breakfast served at table, and my expectations were more than fulfilled. ' - Stanley Salmons - July, 2017
'We have always been delighted with this excellent hotel. It has a delightful setting in manicured gardens. The food is outstanding. The staff try to accommodate guests’ wishes. No silly rules and regulations ' - Nancy Kilburn - April, 2014
