Good Hotel Guide Review

Wonderfully old-fashioned’, the Read family’s traditional hotel ‘continues to tick all the right boxes’. ‘Cheerful and helpful staff, nice views, excellent food’ impressed Guide readers this year. The comfortably furnished Victorian house has log fires in the sitting rooms. ‘Our clean, well-appointed room had an equally good bathroom; we slept well on a firm, comfortable bed.’ Morning coffee and afternoon tea can be enjoyed in the lounges or the ‘well-tended’ garden. Andrew Read and Mark Johnston’s ‘interesting menu’ has ‘beautifully presented’ English and French dishes, perhaps brisket slow-cooked in beer, celeriac cream, rosemary roast potatoes, seared broccoli, rich gravy. ‘An innovative and plentiful breakfast, served at table, exceeded expectations’.

Guest comments

'I've stayed at enough hotels to know what I want. How did Clare House, measure up? Room clean and well appointed? Tick. Bathroom ditto. Hot water not taking ages to come through, and sink draining quickly? Tick. Firm beds? Tick. Blankets and sheets instead of duvet? Tick. Cheerful staff? Tick. Add to this nice views, a well-tended garden, interesting period decor, innovative and plentiful breakfast served at table, and my expectations were more than fulfilled. 'We have always been delighted with this excellent hotel. It has a delightful setting in manicured gardens. The food is outstanding. The staff try to accommodate guests’ wishes. No silly rules and regulations ' - Nancy Kilburn - April, 2014
