Good Hotel Guide Review

In a seaside town that’s one of the sunniest in Scotland, John Bochel and Rachel Philipsen’s ‘good-value’ small hotel is minutes from the beach. The glass-fronted building overlooks the green, the promenade and ‘the panorama of the sea’. ‘Light, cheerfully decorated bedrooms’ are provided with bottled water and bathrobes; four have views over the Moray Firth. At dinner, the host’s ‘homely’ Scottish dishes are ‘competently cooked’ with a European twist: Nairnshire steak tartare; Scrabster halibut, prawns, asparagus, baby potatoes, leek cream. There’s a ‘good choice of wine’ and more than 100 malt whiskies on the menu. Good variety, too, at breakfast.

Guest comments

'We were warmly greeted by Rachel who has taken charge of this family-run hotel with her husband John Bochel. Our room was the Master Sea View Double on the front of the house, looking across the green to the Moray Firth. It was spacious and decorated in cheerful colours. Free Wi-Fi. We enjoyed dinner: I found the food homely and competently prepared. There was a very good choice of wine. Breakfast: a wide choice from the buffet table followed by a choice of usual cooked breakfast items. ' - John Holland - July, 2014
