Good Hotel Guide Review

Cherry and Gordon Gunn clearly know their stuff’, having run their ‘lovely place to stay’ for more than 30 years. ‘It’s always a pleasure, with Cherry’s superb hospitality and Gordon’s excellent cooking,’ say returning visitors, trusted Guide correspondents, this year. The extended 17th-century farmhouse stands in the romantic Walter Scott countryside of the Trossachs: ‘Birdlife is prolific, and red squirrels come in the morning.’ Inside, the style is ‘neo-baronial’ (the vaulted dining room, with a stone fireplace, half-imagines it’s a great hall). B&B accommodation is in bedrooms traditionally decorated with antique furnishings (‘in keeping with the rest of the house’); one has a canopy bed, another a four-poster. Each room is supplied with bottled water, fresh milk and high-end toiletries. In the morning, the host cooks ‘very good’ full Scottish breakfasts with ‘creamy scrambled eggs’, ‘lovely bacon’ and local black pudding. Climb a woodland path, along a stream, to an ‘idyllic little seating area’, or strike out farther afield, perhaps on the Rob Roy trail: Loch Lomond and The Trossachs national park is all around. Guest comments

'Yet another wonderful evening in this comfortable restaurant-with-rooms. The Gunns' experience and attention to detail is legendary. Gordon's food is a superb ; Cherry is the life and soul as front of house, relentless in her energy to serve from the left and take away from the right - covering several miles in one evening serving four or five tables ! . The wine list is carefully chosen . ' - Bill Wood - September, 2017
'We had visited this hotel once before, 17 years ago. It was instantly familiar, and nothing seemed to have changed, from the medieval style throughout the building to the excellent food. We had one of the larger rooms, excellent, a king-size double with a large bath and lots of storage. The furniture and décor were very traditional but all coordinated and in keeping with the rest of the hotel. In the imposing main dining room, the venison and steaks were perfectly cooked, as were the accompanying vegetables. Outside, birdlife was prolific, and red squirrels came in the mornings. ' - Alan & Edwina Williams - March, 2016
