Good Hotel Guide Review

Two stone dogs guard the entrance of this country hotel in between High Street and the high waters of Beaulieu river. The traditional ambience and professional staff please its fans, who think it ‘very special’. Its ‘charming garden’ (‘where we like to sit before dinner’) is another attraction. Sunil Kanjanghat is the long-serving manager. Many original features (oak panelling, an old brick fireplace) have been retained throughout the 19th-century house; there are armchairs, stuffed bookcases – a ‘country house feel’ throughout. ‘The bedroom in which we choose to stay may not be the latest in design, but it’s very comfortable, and we enjoy the views over the green.’ An 1820s barn within the grounds features two new duplex suites, each with a free standing bath and private terrace. In the restaurant, chef Matthew Tomkinson’s refined menus showcase produce from the organic kitchen garden. Characteristic among his modern dishes: honey-roasted free-range duck breast, caramelised endive tart, celeriac purée. For something completely different, visit the popular, family-friendly Monty’s Inn (‘heaving on a sunny Sunday’), where locals and passers-by gather for the hand-pulled ales and posh, provenance-proven pub grub. Renewed, head out on any of the forest walks or bicycle trails nearby. (MC). Montagu Arms is also a member of Pride of Britain hotels.

Guest comments

'We stayed here first 15 years ago, the one-night stay on this occasion was returning from a week's holiday in Dorset. Our sixth visit, and a lovely end to our holiday. The manager Andrew Nightingale made us very welcome as returning clients. As ever the food was delicious and the ambiance great. ' - Monty Knight-Olds - June, 2018
'We had breakfast in the restaurant overlooking the most attractive garden at the rear. The hotel, was full, and had a definite buzz. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent. The staff were helpful and attentive, the public rooms and sitting-out areas in the garden were comfortable, and our room also comfortable and well equipped.. ' - Robert Cooper - August, 2017
'Very special hotel. It doesn't have all the trappings of many larger establishments, and our bedroom and bathroom were not the latest in design, and a little cramped, but very comfortable, with views of the garden. The public rooms are very country house. We enjoy the ambience, the exceptional welcome and service, and sitting in the picturesque garden before dining in the restaurant, where the attention and service is so professional but relaxed. ' - Mary Coles - March, 2015
