‘Our sixth visit, and a wonderful end to our holiday,’ write readers who stopped over at this wisteria-smothered hotel in an unspoilt New Forest village. Built in 1888, in Arts and Crafts style, it hosted Sir Arthur Conan Doyle while he wrote The White Company. Now, whether or not in homage, its ‘comfortable, well-equipped’ bedrooms sport White Company toiletries. Most have a handmade, king-size bed, some a highly ornate four-poster, one has beautiful stained glass. Hayloft suites have a freestanding bath and private terrace. Chef Matthew Whitfield works with locally sourced and home-grown organic ingredients, apples from the orchard, to create dishes served in the Terrace restaurant, overlooking the ‘most attractive’ garden. Typical of his repertoire are chalk stream trout or Beaulieu Estate wood pigeon. Five- and seven-course bespoke tasting menus make full use of Hampshire and New Forest produce. Provenance is no less important at Monty’s Inn, where you might enjoy a ploughman’s with real ale from Ringwood Brewery. ‘As ever the ambience was great.’ (RC, MK-O). This hotel is also a member of Pride of Britain.

Comments about Montagu Arms
We stayed here first 15 years ago, the one-night stay on this occasion was returning from a week's holiday in Dorset. Our sixth visit, and a lovely end to our holiday. The manager Andrew Nightingale made us very welcome as returning clients. As ever the food was delicious and the ambiance great.
- Monty Knight-Olds - June 2018
We had breakfast in the restaurant overlooking the most attractive garden at the rear. The hotel, was full, and had a definite buzz. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent. The staff were helpful and attentive, the public rooms and sitting-out areas in the garden were comfortable, and our room also comfortable and well equipped..
