Good Hotel Guide Review

‘We had breakfast in the restaurant overlooking the most attractive garden,’ write readers, well pleased with this hotel in a New Forest village on Beaulieu Water. They had arrived the night before in a downpour, and found the reception ‘dark and gloomy’, the place ‘apparently deserted’. What a difference a day makes! By morning, ‘The sun was out… The hotel was full and had a definite buzz…The staff were helpful and attentive, the public rooms and sitting-out areas in the garden comfortable, our room was comfortable and well equipped.’ Interiors are traditional, with oak panelling, brick fireplaces, leaded windows. Some bedrooms have a four-poster or half-tester bed and, if ‘not of the latest design’, they are characterful. In a converted barn, two duplex suites have freestanding bath and private terrace. In the restaurant, ‘the food is delicious, the ambience great’. Chef Matthew Tomkinson exploits the organic kitchen garden to create such dishes as roast saddle of Everleigh Farm venison, home-grown artichokes, red wine-braised salsify and venison ‘hotpot’. At breakfast, eggs are from the hotel hens. ‘We would definitely go back.’ (Robert Cooper, Monty Knight-Olds)

Guest comments

'We stayed here first 15 years ago, the one-night stay on this occasion was returning from a week's holiday in Dorset. Our sixth visit, and a lovely end to our holiday. The manager Andrew Nightingale made us very welcome as returning clients. As ever the food was delicious and the ambiance great. ' - Monty Knight-Olds - June, 2018
'We had breakfast in the restaurant overlooking the most attractive garden at the rear. The hotel, was full, and had a definite buzz. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent. The staff were helpful and attentive, the public rooms and sitting-out areas in the garden were comfortable, and our room also comfortable and well equipped.. ' - Robert Cooper - August, 2017
'Very special hotel. It doesn't have all the trappings of many larger establishments, and our bedroom and bathroom were not the latest in design, and a little cramped, but very comfortable, with views of the garden. The public rooms are very country house. We enjoy the ambience, the exceptional welcome and service, and sitting in the picturesque garden before dining in the restaurant, where the attention and service is so professional but relaxed. ' - Mary Coles - March, 2015
