It is written for the reader seeking impartial advice on finding a good place to stay. Hotels cannot buy their way into the Guide. South Sands
Salcombe, Devon
The bright and breezy restaurant, terrace and many of the New England-style bedrooms overlook South Sands beach at this contemporary hotel, where you can bring your dog, dine alfresco on Fowey mussels or crab linguine, and sleep within sight and sound of the waves.
Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
Set against the backdrop of wooded hills, with steps down to a sandy cove, this once-derelict hotel reopened in 2010 after a New England-style revamp, designed to make the most of the surroundings. It is very much on the side of fun, with a relaxed, friendly vibe – dogs and drop-ins, families and flipflops welcome. Smart contemporary bedrooms are decorated in soft marinel colours. Sought-after estuary-view rooms have a Juliet balcony – the best has a Caesar-sized bed, two slipper baths and private balcony – but a leafy inland view is no hardship. You can dine in the restaurant with its wall of French doors, from an eclectic, all-day, bistro-style menu offering everything from a Devon crab sandwich or Fowey mussels, to seared venison loin, Sri Lankan vegetable curry, steak, burgers and pasta. On chilly days, hunker down by the fire in the bar; when the sun shines, eat and drink on the terrace within sight and sound of the waves. ‘The beachside location is perfect for those who love boats’, and the South West Coast Path runs by, ‘We did a beautiful coastal walk to Bolt Head.’ (CD)
