Nowhere ticks the boxes better for a classic beach holiday than Greece. Sunshine, powder white sand and azure sea and skies combine to make this the perfect destination to swim, explore, read and sunbathe for days on end. Here we pick four of our recommended properties on the Greek Islands; for our complete collection of hotels in Greece see here.

1. St Nicolas Bay Resort Hotel and Villas

This Cretan hotel is beautiful – think spacious, stylish modern rooms with rough hewn walls, blue and white striped fabrics and billowing white curtains, set in bungalows facing the sea and surrounded by landscaped gardens. All the rooms have separate seating areas and balconies, and specially commissioned original artworks on the walls. If it’s a special occasion, treat yourself to one of the many suites with a private saltwater pool. Highlights include a large water sports programme, a kids club, a choice of swimming pools and restaurants, and the hotel’s private Blue Flag beach.

2. Hotel Votsala

This is the just the place for those looking for a sociable and relaxing holiday. Family-run Hotel Votsala on Lesbos is close to Pyrgi Thermi, an authentic Greek village pretty much untouched by tourist crowds. The hotel itself is set in lovely gardens with olive groves, fruit trees and flowers, and accommodation is in four low buildings; the simply furnished rooms all have balconies or terraces. This is not a typical Greek resort: there’s no air-conditioning and swimming pool, for starters… if the last two items give you pause, don’t worry: the hotel is set on the beach and sea breezes keep it cool. Excursions include boat trips and different walks in the area with the friendly owner, and twice a week guests are invited to all cook and eat a meal together.

3. Pelagia Aphrodite Hotel

Relax in beautiful, unspoilt surroundings. Run by the Greek-Australian Chlampeas family (the two daughters speak perfect English), this attractive good value hotel is located 50m from the beach and 500m from the village of Agia Pelagia, on Kythira, part of the Lakonian islands. Rooms are large, spotless and simply furnished; most have balconies and all have fridges. Besides the beach next to the hotel, there are several good options nearby as well as a number of great restaurants. The hotel puts on a lavish spread for breakfasted to all cook and eat a meal together.

4. Hotel Grotta

Located on Naxos, one of the Cycladic Islands, and run by the ever-helpful and friendly Lianos family, the Hotel Grotta has just undergone a complete renovation. Rooms are large, with balconies, and with pastel coloured walls, quality bedding and original artworks; bathrooms are modern. The hotel overlooks the main town, with incredible views of the sea and the town. You’re ideally located for nightlife and restaurants, and the many gorgeous beaches and villages dotted around the island.
