Good Hotel Guide Review
‘Chris and Jenny Mullen’s commitment to guests’ comfort and enjoyment is hard to match’ at this personable, family-friendly B&B on the Mourne Coastal Route. Facing Ballyholme Bay, the Edwardian villa is ‘beautifully appointed’ with an eclectic mix of knick-knacks, vintage furnishings and flea market finds that give the place a ‘comfy, cosy’ feel. From a snug single room to a spacious sea-view double to a two-bedroom, two-bathroom family suite, bedrooms are ‘bright’ and individually styled: find a collection of antique mirrors in one, an old trunk serving as a tea hamper in another. Every room is supplied with treats: crisps, chocolate, organic Irish seaweed toiletries. Nab a table on the terrace at the Starfish café to make the most of the vista, as the locals do; brunch (potato cakes, bacon, home-made plum chutney; local crab and eggs on wheaten bread; a traditional Ulster fry) is popular. The house is well placed for coastal walks or bicycle rides, or for a stroll to the busy marina and the town; Belfast is a train ride away. Still, there’s no shame in staying in – the beauty salon has organic and holistic treatments for face and body. More reports, please.
