Good Hotel Guide Review
At the end of a mile-long drive through ‘an estate of great tranquillity and beauty’ stands Fred and Joanna Madden’s Italianate mansion. ‘The gracious 18th-century house is characterised by tasteful flower arrangements, historic heirlooms and stacks of books reflecting a considerable diversity of interest,’ say Guide inspectors in 2017, ‘though domesticity is ensured by two affectionate, stumpy Jack Russell terriers. And Joanna is a warm, friendly hostess, whose commitment and enthusiasm are quite infectious.’ Antique-filled bedrooms with sweeping views of the estate have much to appreciate. ‘On the second floor, our room had an abundance of period furniture and reading material; a comfortable, super-king-size bed; a view of lush greenery.’ Candlelit dinners take their inspiration from bang-on-season produce from the huge walled garden, and meat and fish from the estate. ‘Our excellent meal brought tuna carpaccio with home-made pickles and delicious soda bread; a perfect fillet steak. Piped muzak was the only downside.’ Breakfast ‘gets the day off to a superb start’: home-baked bread, strawberry and lavender marmalade, ‘molten scrambled eggs’.
