Good Hotel Guide Review

‘Grand and glorious’ Hilton Park is less a hotel than a stately ancestral home where one stays as a cherished guest. ‘The Castle’, as the antique- and painting-filled 18th-century Italianate mansion is known locally, is today run by ninth-generation Fred and Joanna Madden. Outside, there’s fishing, boating, wild swimming, rambling, rounders. Inside, spacious bedrooms, some with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking parkland, are furnished with family heirlooms. Books are everywhere – ‘the accumulation of centuries of reading’. To fully soak in the atmosphere, ask for the bathroom with a freestanding bath overlooking the lake. Come dinnertime, gather with fellow guests around a mahogany table, with one of the family playing host. Fred Madden’s four-course menu, supplied with meat and fish from the estate, and the large organic kitchen garden, might include garlic and thyme soufflé; rack of spring lamb, herb crust, quince and mint jelly. (Before a dessert of blackcurrant leaf panna cotta and poached rhubarb, spare a glance at the ornate plaster ceiling, inspired by an ancestor who sailed with Lord Nelson.) ‘Simply the best.’ More reports, please.

Guest comments

'An outstanding venue, providing guests with a most pleasing experience. The grounds are inspirational in their tranquillity and beauty. Joanna's commitment and enthusiasm were infectious. ' - RG - April, 2017
'Hilton Park is NOT a hotel; it is a family home. I have loved it since my first visit in the mid-eighties. Clones is off the beaten track and one has to work some to get there. But one is fully rewarded for every mile travelled. Hilton is expensive, but you get value for every penny spent. Just to stay in such a grand and glorious house surrounded by antiques and art of all kinds is worth twice the price and five times the travel. And then there are the grounds over which the light changes constantly, giving one a little peek at pure tranquillity. The family Madden are simply the best. ' - Susan Canning Stochl - August, 2012
