Good Hotel Guide Review
The pace slows at Gilly and Simon Groom’s ‘wonderfully quiet’ 16th-century stone house. On a sheep farm between two dales, the ‘excellent, very comfortable’ B&B has associations with Mary, Queen of Scots. Choose between the large, traditionally furnished bedrooms: two are in the beamed hayloft; another, on the ground floor of the main house, has direct access to the garden. Breakfast is taken around the large refectory table in the original Elizabethan kitchen. Here, the Grooms whip up dishes to suit all diets, using fresh local ingredients and home-grown produce. Chatsworth House, Hardwick Hall and Haddon Hall are within easy reach (book early for accommodation during the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show). 2 miles E of Matlock; collection from railway/bus station can be arranged.
