Good Hotel Guide Review
The log fires still burn within the old stone walls, the mismatched furnishings still stand; the vegetable patch continues to push up fresh ingredients for lunch and dinner. This honey-hued Georgian inn is now under new ownership (as part of the Cirrus Inns group), but previous high standards have been maintained. ‘We enjoyed good service from the same friendly staff, and the rooms were as we’d remembered. In fact, we had no idea the business had changed hands,’ said regular Guide correspondents on a return visit in 2017. ‘Comfortable, well-equipped bedrooms’ are individually decorated in contemporary country style; one has French doors opening to the garden. (Rear rooms most removed from the main road are quietest.) Eat in one of three dining areas, or find a spot in the large garden on a sunny day: the ‘pleasant, knowledgeable’ staff bring out ‘such good food’. On the ‘interesting’ pub menu: feta cheese, roasted beetroot, spinach and frisée salad; grilled Tamworth pork sausages and bacon, braised Puy lentils. In the morning, freshly baked croissants still show up at breakfast – ‘but now there’s brioche as well!’ (Jill and Mike Bennett, Michael and Margaret Cross)
