Good Hotel Guide Review
‘The restaurant, the room and, in particular, the hospitality exceeded our expectations,’ say returning visitors this year. Alison and Fabrice Bouteloup’s restaurant-with-rooms occupies a red-stone former coaching inn, in a pretty conservation village. Hands-on hosts, the owners are ‘attentive but informal’; their staff are ‘efficient and friendly’. A grandson of farmers, the French-born chef/patron is praised for his ‘tasty local flavours’. In the dining room (‘attractively decorated to reflect the rural surroundings’), cuisine grand-mère meets modern European cooking in his daily-changing menus. A typical dish: saddle of lamb, shoulder croquette, Puy lentils, honeyed parsnips. Alison Bouteloup, who has a background in the wine trade, discusses grape varieties and vintages with aplomb. And so to bed, in one of the ‘spotlessly clean and inviting’ bedrooms. These vary in size and aspect. At breakfast, there’s ‘plenty of toast’ – Fabrice Bouteloup’s bread is great with home-made jam and marmalade; ‘delicious’ cooked dishes.
