Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
Fine food, a pleasing pub and spacious bedrooms are among the benefits at this wisteria-clad Arts and Crafts building with Tudor origins, in a picturesque village by the Beaulieu river on the edge of the New Forest. House rooms are designated Snug, Feature and Suite. ‘Cherry room was delightful; spacious and very comfortable,' reads one report. Another reader had a 'well-furnished suite with a dressing table' and views over 'the well-tended gardens'. Other rooms overlook the street roamed by ponies, or perhaps enjoy a view of Beaulieu Palace. The more contemporary, dog-friendly Courtyard Retreats in the old chauffeur garages will sleep a family, and have an espresso machine, a decanter of gin, a marble bathroom with bath and drench shower, perhaps a private terrace. In the wood-panelled fine-dining restaurant, the modern British menu includes dishes such as grilled wild seabass with olive tapenade or caramelised shallot tart. ‘The food was very good as was the rather expensive Sancerre we chose to accompany it.’ You can eat more cheaply in the on-site pub, Monty’s Bar. ‘Breakfasts were excellent, particularly the waffles with berry compote.' (R and S L, and others)
