Good Hotel Guide Review
Andy and Kinga Rudd’s modern restaurant-with-rooms occupies a fine 15th-century building in this popular seaside resort. Rich with period charm and history – the Duke of York (later James II) visited frequently when he was High Admiral of the English navy during the Anglo-Dutch war – the Grade II* listed building is filled with modern fabrics, and contemporary and vintage furnishings against handsome old beams, wide elm floorboards and medieval windows. Harbour-fresh fish features in the popular restaurant, in dishes such as pan-fried sea bream, potato and emmental soufflé, pistachio pesto. Most of the characterful bedrooms are up a narrow staircase. Each is different: one has a glorious pargetted ceiling; another has a double-ended slipper bath in front of an original fireplace.
