Good Hotel Guide Review

There are ‘stunning’ views of Bala lake and Arenig mountain from the bedrooms of this Victorian house on a hillside in Snowdonia national park. Visitors this year appreciated the decor’s ‘perfect taste’. The comfortable bedrooms are supplied with cut flowers, home-baked biscuits, books, magazines. Both Berwyn and Arenig have an antique four-poster, underfloor heating in a luxury bathroom with spa bath and separate shower. Aran is a double-aspect room with super-king-size bed, a bathroom with a bath under the window allowing you to soak while gazing at the lake. Walkers returning drenched on chilly days find drying facilities, a fire burning in the sitting room. Breakfast, served at a long table alongside a grand piano, includes bread, granola and preserves, home made by hostess Katrina Le Saux in her kitchen; the honey is home made by the bees in the house’s hives. There is a full Welsh cooked breakfast for those who wish, terraces for sitting out in the landscaped gardens. For a gourmet meal, Tyddyn Llan in Llandrillo is less than 20 minutes’ away by car (see entry). Bodnant Garden and Portmeirion are an easy drive.

Guest comments

'This beautiful house stands in an elevated position overlooking Lake Bala. The three guest bedrooms are beautifully appointed and spotlessly clean. We even had electric blankets! The owners are delightful. On arrival, we were offered tea and home-made cake. This was our second visit; we were made to feel like friends rather than clients. There are lovely walks in the area and for those who love peace and quiet, this is a real haven. ' - Linda Ferstendik - October, 2012
'Our fourth stay. A delight. Charming hosts. We think there is no better place to stay in North Wales. Bedrooms and breakfast room now redecorated. ' - Lynn and Ann Mainwaring - July, 2012
