Good Hotel Guide Review

‘As delightful as ever’, reports a trusted Guide correspondent in 2017, of Adam Fox-Edwards’s former coaching inn-turned-sporting hotel near Dartmoor. Justly popular with anglers, the hotel has fishing rights over 20 miles of the River Tamar, plus expert ghillies, and a tackle shop in an 18th-century cockfighting pit. It is also ‘a wonderful place in which to relax’: the residents’ sitting room, ‘charming and spacious’, has log fires, ‘marvellous oil paintings’, ‘lots of really comfy seating’ and ‘pretty (not old-fashioned!) chintz’; doors lead directly to the garden. ‘All the glossies and several daily papers are here, too, for more indolent days.’ Country-style bedrooms are ‘cosy and comfortable’ with antiques, home-made biscuits and ‘lovely views over the pretty garden’. Hungry diners eat in either of the two bars or in the main dining room, where long-serving chef Steve Pidgeon’s award-winning modern British dishes might include free-range chicken fillet, hay-smoked celeriac, creamed leeks, honey-glazed parsnips. ‘Our group meal was a cut above the average event dinner, but the highlight was the fabulous full English the next morning.’ (Abigail Kirby-Harris)

Guest comments

'A fishing trip. Horrible weather but we were well advised by David Pilkington, the fishing manager, and we were able to fish. Very nice room, I had booked a single but was upgraded. Comfortable and quiet, big bathroom with lots of storage space. Ate in the bar at lunch and dinner, informal atmosphere and great food. A really nice hotel ' - Peter Anderson - June, 2014
'This remains an excellent family-run hotel. We are not fishermen but were made very welcome by polite and attentive staff. Our room was well appointed and equipped. A lot of stairs to climb. A good choice of well-cooked food, pleasantly served. ' - David R.W. Jervois - March, 2013
'An excellent combination of relatively simple accommodation and outstanding cooking (though the menu didn't chage during our stay). The breakfast shared the freshness and elegance of dinner. A convivial bar, a comfortable residents' lounge. The dining room has been refurbished in a continental style. The manager/owner was in evidence. ' - Richard Parish - July, 2012
