Good Hotel Guide Review
On a private no-through road, with views from its elevated position over the pointy roofscape of Perth to the mountains, Claire Dingwall Slater and Alick Slater’s Arts and Crafts-style Victorian guest house enters the Guide this year with lavish praise from our inspectors. ‘Claire’s lively, friendly personality and enthusiasm are refreshing to experience.’ Smart bedrooms have contemporary decor, antiques, a coffee machine, mini-fridge and home-made treats. ‘A sizeable room had a small integral lounge, a beautifully tiled and fitted bathroom.’ The pièce de résistance is a suite with emperor bed, a bathroom with cast iron slipper bath and walk-in shower, a seating area in the turret. Dinner, served in the candlelit dining room, must be ordered 48 hours in advance, from extensive menus. ‘Pea velouté, a grilled scallop, roast salmon and duck did not disappoint, and led to wonderful cranachan.’ Venison is sourced from the owners’ deer park. Bring your own wine; they don’t charge corkage. Eggs for breakfast are laid by the hens that forage in a garden with ‘lush lawns, vibrant flower borders and majestic monkey puzzle tree’.
