Good Hotel Guide Review
‘A fascinating historical experience.’ Michael McMahon and John Bentley-Dunn’s authentically restored and painstakingly maintained house in the Boyne valley ‘exudes class from bedroom to table’. Built in 1740, it was once the home of John Foster, the last Speaker of the Irish House of Commons. There’s exploration to be done inside and out: the house is filled with period-appropriate antiques, paintings and furnishings; the enclosed gardens, with an intricate sunken box parterre and Greek-style summerhouse, are surrounded by mature trees, shrubs and a ten-foot laurel hedge. Toast the past in a former ballroom, then dine ‘sumptuously’ in the panelled dining room (dinners by arrangement for groups of six or more). Later, retire to one of the well-dressed bedrooms, each equipped with modern comforts and a subtly disguised bathroom.
